Brazil, located in South America, began growing coffee in 1727. Coffee seeds were smuggled by Francisco de Mello Palheta from the neighboring French colony of Guiana to the northeast of Brazil. By 1845 Brazil accounted for 45% of global coffee production. So far, Brazil's total output is still the world's largest, accounting for about 1/3 of the world's total output.
In Brazil, coffee trees are grown at altitudes of 650 to 2,600 feet. The main production areas are concentrated in the central and southern provinces, such as Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo and Parana. About 300,000 farms are engaged in coffee cultivation, covering an area of no more than 10 hectares. Most of them are harvested by machines and treated by sun. About 80% of coffee is Arabica. 65% of export-grade coffee is exported from Santos.
Brazil-Cerrado Coffee
Cilado is Brazil's famous premium coffee producing region. The treatment is more elaborate. Unlike Brazilian Santos coffee, which is treated in the sun, Sirado coffee is mostly washed or semi-washed.
