Rwandan coffee beans
In some ways Rwandan coffee is generally very delicate tasting compared to Kenyan coffee, with pleasant sweetness, caramel and citrus flavours (lemon, orange).
In general, Rwandan coffee is rated higher than neighbouring Zimbabwe and Zambia coffee, but has yet to gain recognition for Kenyan and Tanzanian coffee. Rwanda also produces Fairtrade coffee.

Review: Characteristics of Rwandan Coffee
Fine Rwandan coffee offers a creamy body of floral notes along with Ethiopian yeka coffee and acidic Kenyan coffee. Aroma can provide lemon and orange blossom aromas with floral notes, complementing sweet citrus notes, with caramel notes in the finish.
The sweetness of premium Rwandan bourbon coffee hints at caramel cane sugar and spices of clove, cinnamon and spiced powder and rose blossoms. Butter creamy body into the aftertaste.
Rwandan coffee has characteristics somewhat similar to those of other East African coffees such as Zimbabwe and Kenya.
History of Rwandan Coffee
German missionaries were the first to introduce coffee trees to Rwanda in 1904. From around 1930, coffee production in Rwanda increased, but mainly low-grade, high-yield green coffee beans, created by a government decision to create one of the few important cash crops in the country.
Today, Rwanda is Africa's ninth largest Arabica coffee producer, with some 450,000 small farms averaging less than one hectare (about 165 coffee trees per coffee farmer) and coffee cultivation of about 28,000 hectares.
Coffee is more of a culture in African countries than we are used to in the West, and rituals and socializing are key components of any gathering. The industry values its crops-Hope ("Ikizere"), Vision ("Ikerokoza"), Ishema ("Proud")-to instruct people how to work together.

Rwandan coffee plant variety
About 95% of Rwandan coffee plants are high-quality Arabica varieties. Also cultivated are relatively small numbers of Catuai and Caturra varieties. One grape variety grown in Rwanda is Coffea arabica var. mayaguez, variety of bourbon (Coffea arabica var.bourbon).
Most green coffee is often wet treated at public washing stations used by many coffee farmers.

Most coffee is grown in Rwanda at altitudes between 1,200 and 1,800 metres. Rwandan coffee plants flower in September and coffee cherries are harvested in October, and green coffee is processed from March to July.
Rwanda's wholesale coffee market has been plagued in the past by volatile political events, war and genocide that have left many dead. The future of Rwanda's coffee market depends on political stability in the region.
Rwandan coffee processing
Investments in Rwanda's infrastructure have led to the establishment of coffee processing plants in the country, shortening the time from harvest to processing and improving the quality of coffee in Rwanda.

Politics of Rwanda and coffee transport issues
Rwanda's coffee crop has historically been shipped all over Uganda to Kenya and from there mostly to European markets. This extensive journey sometimes leads to a decline in coffee quality and makes the crop more vulnerable to current political situations.
Because of the difficulty in bringing Rwandan coffee crops to market, many farmers discourage the production of quality coffee in large quantities. The growing ability of rural farmers to process coffee and access wholesale markets bodes well for the future of coffee cultivation in Rwanda.
Virtually all coffee in Rwanda is grown in the central region of the country, Kigali (the capital) and western Rwanda, while the eastern region of the country is primarily a national park where no coffee is grown. The only exception is the beautiful Lake Kivu, whose gorgeous scenes only match the quality of the coffee.

Rwandan coffee brand "Second sunrise" seems to have disappeared from the market, possibly due to political or export problems. Brand reviews seem to indicate that it is a fairly generic coffee, similar to any Rwandan commodity bean.
