Musasa Musasha Group, Ruli Sector, Rwanda| Gattaguana processing station washed red bourbon flavor?
Known as the Land of Thousand Hills and the biopic Land of Gorillas in the Mist, Rwanda is less than half the size of Scotland but has more than 3 million inhabitants. It is a small landlocked country in East Africa with hilly terrain, fertile land and ancient bourbon species. Coffee is believed to have been introduced to Rwanda by German missionaries in 1904, and coffee is the only income-generating crop for rural farmers. Coffee thrives but unlike neighboring countries, which have centralized auction systems, farmers 'cooperatives can do business directly with buyers. Rwanda is now the most advanced African country.
Rwanda exported 45,000 tonnes of coffee beans in the years leading up to the severe ethnic conflict of the 1990s, although exports have since fallen to 25,000 tonnes, half the level of Kenya and Tanzania. But it still accounts for about a third of Rwanda's export earnings. The genocide of 1994, which claimed nearly half a million lives and virtually wiped out the know-how to grow coffee beans, coincided with a sharp drop in coffee prices around the world, further aggravating Rwanda's coffee industry, which is now re-emerging and rebuilding the infrastructure needed to produce and process fine coffee beans at a steady pace. Most notably, PEARL helps Rwanda rebuild agricultural institutions, production capacity, and talent to help small farmers sell coffee directly to buyers in the specialty coffee market at high profits.
Musasa Cooperative is the largest coffee company in Rwanda, with 1,815 members located in the mountains of 1,500 - 2,000 meters in the northwest. All small farmers grow 500 trees on an area of less than 1 hectare. In 2003, they started to set up their own washing plant with the aim of improving the chances of selling their crops to international buyers and obtaining good prices. Gatagara processing station, located in a 1,800-meter high and steep green valley, with about 175 people working in Gatagara during harvest season, 19 permanent workers, processing beans from 20 farms, was the 6th best processing station in 2011.
