Barclaycard, the oldest bank in the UK, has partnered with British coffee chain Costa Coffee (the UK's most famous coffee brand) to launch a reusable coffee cup that integrates NFC technology and allows coffee fees to be paid through the cup without contact.

Later this month, all Costa Coffee stores will sell Clever Cup for £14.99, with each sold donated to the Costa Foundation for £1.

The Clever Cup has a silicone base that can be removed for easy cleaning. The silicone base contains a contactless chip that customers can pay with a cup at Costa or any other place where contactless payment is accepted.

The coffee cup is supported by Barclays Card bPay, which means that users can track their chip card expenses, recharge card balances, and use dedicated applications to intercept or cancel contactless payments.

Costa is expanding the use of Clever Cup to encourage customers to abandon disposable takeout cups.

Since 2014, Barclays has launched a number of innovative products in the field of contactless payments: contactless payment gloves, jackets, bPay payment wristbands, bPay payment bracelets for British athletes, contactless ATM machines, and a range of contactless payment accessories launched in partnership with Topshop (fast fashion brand). The Clever Cup jointly launched with Costa makes an appeal in terms of green environmental protection, which will become a bright spot of non-contact payment.
