Have you ever had blue mountain coffee?
As you may know, the Blue Mountains are located in eastern Jamaica. The highest mountain in the western Caribbean, despite its unique climate and soil conditions, produces coffee beans that are not really Blue Mountain coffee. Only coffee beans grown above 1700 meters above sea level will be certified by the Jamaica government as "Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee," while those below this threshold will only be referred to as "Jamaica High Mountain Coffee."
Although about 2,000 tons of premium Blue Mountain coffee beans are produced annually, this "golden light" bean is still quite rare in the market. Because in 1969, Jamaica was hit hard by a hurricane. At that time, UCC Ueshima Coffee introduced ecological technology into coffee cultivation to assist in the revival of Jamaica coffee industry. As a token of appreciation, the Jamaica government signed a contract with Japan in 1971, agreeing to ship 90 percent of its annual output to Japan. Most of the remaining 10 percent went into the pockets of the rich or royalty before it entered the market.
Because Blue Mountain coffee is so scarce in circulation, Blue Mountain coffee, which we can usually buy in convenience stores or coffee shops, can only be regarded as Blue Mountain "flavor" coffee. Usually, in order to imitate the bitter taste of Blue Mountain coffee, the manufacturer will use different varieties of coffee beans to blend. The more conscientious ones use Jamaica alpine coffee mixed with Hawaiian kona or Colombia coffee, while the more unscrupulous ones use Brazilian, guadalupe or other cheap coffee. But even so, coffee from other countries, more or less because of "imitation" Blue Mountain coffee and increased sales. As for pure Blue Mountain coffee, although only a few stores in Taiwan sell it, it is probably expensive to taste a cup.
