History of Coffee in Guatemala
Guatemala coffee in Guatemala was introduced by missionaries in 1750. It was only in 1860 that the Germans expanded the entire industry. To date, about 60000 family farms operate the coffee industry in Guatemala.
Guatemala, which means "forest country" in Mayan, is a country in Central America, located in the south of the North American continent. It borders the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, Mexico to the north, Belize to the northeast, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. Guatemala produces about 3.5 million bags of coffee each year, and raw coffee beans account for 40 per cent of the country's total agricultural exports. This country, which mainly grows and exports coffee, has fertile soil suitable for coffee trees, suitable climate, abundant water resources and high altitude planting height.
Eight areas are divided into Antigua, Vivette Nanguo, Koban Rain Forest, Attland, Farahannis Plain, San Marco, Akatti Nanguo and New Oriental. New Oriental is the youngest coffee producing area in Guatemala.
Rain Water is abundant here, under the shade of clouds for many years, the climate is similar to the producing area of Koban rainforest. In ancient times, it was a volcanic area, where the soil was made up of metamorphic rocks and rich in minerals. The New Oriental District used to be the poorest area in Guatemala before it began to grow coffee. Since the 1950s, farmers in the mountains have started growing coffee on its natural, well-nourished land. Gradually, it is full of vitality, and now it has become a rising star in the Guatemalan coffee industry. The coffee beans selected for this sharing meeting come from the Orente producing area, which is located in the New Oriental producing area of Guatemala.
It's interesting because it's rare.
Washing beans in Guatemala is more common, while sun-drying beans are relatively rare. Usually at the end of the harvest period, some coffee fruits that are not suitable for washing are selected and treated in the sun. This treatment is also destined to achieve the excellent quality of Guatemala with little sun exposure. Guatemala sun beans were used as competition beans by WBC finalists.
