The Excellence Cup will be held in Ecuador for the first time in the 20-year history of the event.
The CoE cup competition and auction will be held for the first time in Ecuador, a country widely seen by coffee buyers as having rich untapped potential in the arabica specialty coffee market.
U.S.-based CoE organizers have partnered with Ecuador's largest specialty coffee industry member organization, the Ecuadorian Association of Special Caf é s (ACEDE), to launch a pilot scheme in 2020.
The Excellence Cup project-which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in Brazil-aims to celebrate some of the best coffee producers grown in the country through a rigorous cup test competition. More importantly, the project links buyers to high-quality, traceable green coffee batches, while offering a quality premium to winning producers, which often dwarfs local market prices.
According to CoE organizers ACE and Ecuador's ACEDE, the 2020 pilot project will include a CoE Cup test competition in the city of Guayaquil and the participation of an international jury, as well as a live public auction. Groups plan to provide a complete CoE auction platform by 2021, including online bidding.
"We are very excited and hope that Ecuador can join the ranks of the coffee capital of the world and promote our best coffee to the most upscale coffee shops around the world," Wilson Gonzalez Ramos, executive director of ACEDE, said in a pilot program announcement released yesterday. "We are confident that we will approve Ecuador as the producer of some of the best coffee in the world."
Ecuador's coffee industry has been contradictory for decades, with the coffee grower importing low-quality robusta beans from markets such as Germany and the United States for industrial production of soluble / instant coffee products. Although this segment has slowed over the past two years due to higher transport costs and wages than in other traditional coffee-producing countries, the South American country's premium Arabica coffee market has picked up.
According to the latest USDA report on the Global Agricultural Information Network, "professional coffee growers with a good reputation get better prices than traditional self-sufficient coffee growers." "the price negotiations for professional coffee take little or no account of the international coffee futures price. It is reported that a bag of high-altitude specialty coffee from Ecuador in 2018 sells for $3800. "
Ecuador's main coffee-growing areas include Loja, Pichincha, Imbabura and Azuay. Coffee is also produced in the Galapagos Islands.
