Harrar-also spelled Harar- includes the easternmost coffee-growing area of Ethiopia. It is subdivided into four smaller regions: East Harar, West Hara, Bell and Arsi. Harrar stretches through the vast desert to the border, and to the east is Somalia.

Coffee growth is concentrated in the highlands, from Diledawa and Harald, to the south and west, in a slow downward arc.

Geography and culture

The climate in Harald, Arsi and Bell is drier and warmer than in western and southern Ethiopia. There are large areas of arid desert in the east, north and south of the Harald coffee growing area.

The city of Dire Dawa is the main trade and transportation hub in eastern Ethiopia and the second largest city in Ethiopia.

As Ethiopia is inland, the railway line from Addis Ababa to the port of Djibouti passes through the city of Dildawa, Dire Dawa, making it an important city for trade and commerce in Ethiopia. Harald's coffee business is also concentrated in Diledawa, where all major exporters have offices, warehouses and export factories.

The roads in the coffee-growing areas of eastern Ethiopia tend to stretch along the ridges.

Coffee usually grows at higher elevations. Usually, people have to come down from the hillside to get to the coffee farm.

The characteristics of coffee

Almost all coffee from Harald is tanned. There are several native varieties that grow specifically in this area, and they interact well with altitude, climate and soil types, producing a very unique flavor.

High-quality Harald coffee is famous for its fruity and creamy body. The best Harald coffee has a unique blueberry flavor and, of course, other fruit aromas.

A differentiated coffee from the Harald area is "amber beans" or "golden coffee beans". "this refers to the appearance of unbaked coffee beans, which are yellowish or amber. However, it is important to recognize that this color may come from multiple processes and that amber bean coffee has multiple flavor characteristics.

Sun harar is famous for its full body and red wine flavor. Blueberry and dark chocolate are common words in the cup review description. Compared with washed coffee, tanning harar is a bit more unrestrained and wild.

From picking to processing, almost all the processes are handled by hand. Even shelling is done by hand.

Harar coffee is usually divided into three categories: longberry, shortberry and mocha. Long fruit, longberry, refers to individual larger beans; short fruit, shortberry, smaller beans; mocha, mocha, composed of round beans. In addition, there are common grades with reference to the number of defective beans, such as G4 and G3.

Residents of Harar, like other ET areas, coffee is a part of life, and the famous ET coffee gift is also daily here.
