La Prosperidad de Chirinos, also known as "Chirinos", recently joined the Atlas supply chain, and we are fortunate to work closely with this dedicated and motivated team. Chirinos is located in the province of San Ignacio, which is 1800 meters above sea level, and its name is the same as the community in which it lives. Our partnership officially began in 2015, when we purchased a container and several single production micro-batches, as well as an experimental double fermentation batch. Although Chirinos is larger than many of the cooperatives we work with in Peru, they are certainly the most quality-oriented. They have invested heavily in laboratories and quality control training programs, both for employees and producers.

Founded in 1968, Chirinos currently has 728 producer members and some pioneer members who can still see to help the cooperatives around it. Chirinos exports about 60 containers a year, of which 75 per cent are FTO certified and about 20 per cent are coffee produced by women. Over the past few years, Chirinos has been working hard to highlight the demonstration of micro-lots from dedicated members. 15 minutes to a few hours from the community, most producers own about 4-5 hectares of land. Most of this coffee comes from high altitude and has a complex taste and moderate acidity. During our stay, we had the opportunity to visit four cooperative members. One of the most attractive features of cooperatives is that they are committed to the welfare of their members by diversifying their land.

Composting and fertilizer: the cooperative started its organic composting plant in 2009 and has built an extraordinary facility. They currently produce two kinds of fertilizer, one with (and one without) microbes. According to the different fertilization season, the addition of trace elements will also be adjusted. The organic material of this fertilizer comes from the pulp of coffee cherries and is occasionally mixed with hay. From May to September, when pulp is available, Chirinos can produce 4000 bags of fertilizer.

Earlier this year, Chirinos added an additional sheller and screening machine, which will be dedicated and strictly used for micro batches. This will allow for faster processing of smaller batches and greater traceability. Atlas will buy large quantities of mixed high-quality coffee from Chirinos, as well as micro-batch products from four single producers that will arrive in January 17.
