Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, Journal of the American Heart Association, a new study finds that higher tea consumption and moderate coffee consumption may be associated with lower rates of death, coronary heart disease (CHD).

The study followed more than 37000 tea and coffee drinkers over a period of more than 13 years. Participants completed the food recall to record the typical intake of tea and coffee, which were divided into groups ranging from light to heavy consumers. The researchers accounted for variables such as health history, height, weight and waistline and the number of deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke recorded during the study.

The overall results showed that drinking more than 6 cups of tea per day was associated with a 36% lower risk of heart disease and less than one cup of tea per day. There seems to be no such protective effect on the risk of dying from stroke for any amount of tea. Among coffee drinkers, milder consumption levels (2-3 cups a day) drank less than one cup of coffee a day compared with the highest risk of dying from heart disease (21%).

The researchers' findings acknowledge some uncertain variables. For example, the difference between decaffeinated and regular coffee cannot be accurately calculated, nor can it make specific recommendations on the type of tea, but because of its popularity in the Netherlands, the researchers assume that most tea consumption is black tea.

In addition, the researchers found that tea and coffee drinkers have opposite lifestyles, while tea drinkers tend to engage in healthy habits, and coffee drinkers are more likely to eat less health and smoke. It is difficult to say for sure what variables that affect these other lifestyles may contribute to overall performance.

Advice on how to reduce the risk of heart disease has always revolved around diet and physical activity. The American Heart Association recommends that 30 minutes of physical activity be spent most of the time with saturated fat in the diet to reduce cholesterol and the risk of heart disease and stroke. This study shows that drinking may lead to your overall health.
