The export of coffee beans

Last Updated: 2025/08/21, Every year, 5 million to 6 million tons of fresh coffee beans are produced, most of which take a long journey, starting from the plantations, being carried on animals, and then by land, water, rail, and until today's aviation system reaches all parts of the world.

As we have seen, until coffee beans are ready to be sold or exported, they are stored and transported in the form of "parchment coffee beans" (that is, endocarp) (although this increases weight and increases the cost of storage and transportation). And almost all new coffee beans are packed in bags of crude fibers made of jute and Bordeaux, each containing about 60 kilograms. In Hawaii, bags that can hold 45 kilograms are commonly used; in Colombia, 70 kilograms are more popular; and in Puerto Rico, 90 kilograms are sometimes used.

Coffee bags are transported in containers that can hold 250 standard bags, or on wooden conveyors. It is estimated that there are 2250 ships in the world engaged in coffee bean transportation. Pests and moisture can cause serious problems during transportation. At the destination, the coffee beans are selected to another warehouse or picked up in the hands of the roaster.
