The national flag of Burundi is rectangular in shape and has an aspect ratio of 5:3. Two crossing white wide stripes divide the flag surface into four triangles, the upper and lower two equal, red; the left and right two equal, green. The flag has a white round ground in the center, with three red hexagonal stars with green edges arranged in a triangle shape. Red symbolizes the blood of those who died in the struggle for freedom, green symbolizes the desired progressive cause, and white represents peace among mankind. The three stars symbolize "unity, labor and progress" and also represent the three tribes of Burundi-Hutu, Tutsi and Twa. The three ethnic groups live in peace with each other to build their homeland. Burundi has a democratic presidential system of government. On November 1, 2001, the transitional government of Burundi was established, Buyoya served as president for the first 18 months of the transition period, and Ndayizeye, the former general secretary of FDD, served as vice-president. On 30 April 2003, the transition to power was carried out smoothly in accordance with the Arusha Agreement, with Ndayizeye taking over as President and Kadege, a Tutsi, as Vice-President. The transition period entered the second phase smoothly. In November, the Burundian government and the largest rebel force, the Forces for the Defence of Democracy (FDD), signed a peace package agreement, which allowed FDD to join the transitional government and made significant progress in the Burundian peace process. From June to August 2005, Burundi successfully held local, legislative and presidential elections. The FDD won 63 per cent, 55 per cent and 88 per cent of seats in the local, national assembly and senate elections, respectively, to become the ruling party, with its leader, Nkurunziza, elected president and inaugurated on 26 August
