Kenya Micro batch Series Kenya Micro Lot

Kenya's boutique coffee industry is different from the general, mostly in the form of a combination of small farmers, wet treatment plants and cooperatives. Farmers will send the harvested coffee cherries to nearby processing plants or cooperatives in the shortest possible time. At the same time, cooperatives also regularly send staff to tutor local farmers to ensure that each producer has professional planting skills to maintain the quality of coffee. He flies to Kenya every year and chooses the best batches from all regions of Kenya in the capital Nieli.

The Katuji processing plant, founded in 1979, is a member of the Othaya Farmers' Cooperative. It is located in the south of Neri District, on the eastern slope of Aberdel, about 140km north of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and about 1860 meters above sea level. The well-drained, organic-rich volcanic red soil nourishes the coffee trees here, and enough altitude and cool climate allow the coffee fruit to mature slowly, creating raw coffee beans with high hardness. The main growing season is from October to December, with an average of 250,300 coffee trees planted on each farm. Farmers strictly abide by the planting guidelines under the supervision of regional committees; at the same time, in order to promote biodiversity and maintain the good growth of crops, intercropping is also implemented-in addition to coffee, grevillea and macadamia are also planted as shade trees, and bananas.

The Tambaya Cooperative is located in the town of Karatina in Nieri (an autonomous city with a population of about 7000), in the southern foothills of the Kenyan Mountains, where the soil is quite fertile, and part of the vast Aberdel Mountains (Aberdare Range), with an average elevation of more than 1550 meters. Karatina is also located along the Nanobi-Nieri highway in the south, and the traffic environment is still convenient. (to the east is the famous city of Kirinyaga)

The co-operative, once a member of Mukurweini, became independent as a self-owned cooperative in the 1990s (strictly speaking, Mukurweini is not far southwest of Karatina). Tambaya, which is itself a cooperative, is also a member of the Rumukia Coffee Farmers' Cooperative (Rumukia Coffee Farmer Society). Rumukia, similar to the Othaya Coffee Farmers' Cooperative (Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society), plays an important role in Kenya's boutique coffee farmers. This cooperative group is usually composed of several wet treatment plants and has independent quality control and dry treatment equipment.

Including cup control capacity and monitoring dry processing procedures, it can be said to be another management and control department at the end of raw bean processing. Well-known such as Rumukia and Othaya, can also be regarded as one of the quality assurance indicators of coffee production.

Tambaya is one of the processing plants cooperated by Rumikia, that is, the Tambaya Cooperative itself is a wet treatment plant and has nearly 1100 independent smallholder members, each growing only about 250 coffee trees, such a micro-farm type also helps the cooperative manage each plant more effectively. Tambaya, which deals with inter-plant cooperatives, is quite complete in both upward links with farmers and downward cooperation with large cooperatives.

■ treatment: washing

■ level: AA TOP

■ varieties: SL28, SL34

The Giando processing plant is a member of the Rungeto Farmers' Cooperative, located in the city of Kirinyaga in the central province in the southern foothills of Kenya. Rungeto has three processing plants, including the oldest Kii, followed by Karimikui, which was founded in 1965 and 1968, respectively. By contrast, Kiangoi can be said to be a fairly recent treatment plant, which began operation in 1995 and is jointly managed by seven board members, two of whom are selected from the above-mentioned two treatment plants with recent development but complete management experience.

The main harvest period is from October to November every year (secondary harvest from May to June), followed by a series of treatments and exports. The representative of excellent varieties in Kenya, SL28, is the main planting variety. The altitude of the coffee planting area falls at 1750-1850m, and the average annual rainfall reaches 1300-1800mm. Rain Water is sufficient, and the precipitation needed for the main harvest period comes from the main rainy season from March to June (the precipitation from October to the end of November will affect the secondary harvest period of the coming year). During the harvest period, Giando does a solid job of post-production work, such as manual hand picking and removal of overripe, unripe beans and foreign bodies, such as pre-washing and stage work, as well as full-sun drying after washing, and then sent to the dry treatment plant. On the other hand, we should also strengthen the implementation of environmental protection, such as insisting on planting 200-500 trees per hectare to ensure the nutritional supply of coffee trees, avoiding excessive land use, using clean river water for washing treatment and recycling water resources, and so on. From harvesting, post-processing to sustainable operation, the intentions of each link reflect the level of the treatment plant and excellent cup test performance.
