Coffee industry in Honduras
Dry organic coffee, taken in San Juan Ciudo, Honduras
The coffee industry in Honduras is an important part of the economy and history of Honduras. Since 2011, Honduras has topped Central America in coffee production, replacing the leading position long dominated by neighboring Guatemala. [1] A natural environment suitable for coffee can be found all over Honduras, and even the outer islands of the Gulf Islands can grow coffee.
History
The 19th century
Coffee cultivation in Hong Honduras and the country began at the end of the 19th century, and there were several small coffee plantations. Although the soil, climate and other natural conditions of Honduras at that time were more or less the same as those of other neighboring countries that produced coffee, such as Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and so on, however, the lack of transportation construction connecting the origin and the port has led to the lag of the coffee industry in Honduras. As a result, most of the coffee in Honduras is sold only in the domestic market, with few sales abroad. In Honduras, it takes more than four years for a coffee tree to be replanted to produce a profit, which is estimated to rise from 100% to 300% after seven years. [2] the coffee produced in Honduras in 1894 was about 20000 piculs, of which only 10% was exported. Exports are mainly exported through ports such as Amapala and the port of Cortes in El Salvador. In 1900, Honduras exported 54510 pesos worth of coffee. [3]
The 21st century
Honduran coffee is the most popular coffee in Europe at the beginning of the 21st century. During this period, more than half of the coffee produced in Honduras was sold to the European Union market. Among them, Germany is the largest importer of Honduran coffee, importing 40 million kilograms of Honduran coffee a year, worth more than US $40 million. Belgium and Italy often rank second and third in terms of imports and are also important exporters of Honduran coffee. Some Honduran coffee is also sold to the United States and Japan, but sales are not as good as those in the European Union.
