The second cup of coffee Second Cup plans to turn some coffee shops in Canada into marijuana shops.

Second Cup, a well-known Canadian coffee chain, announced on Thursday that it will form an alliance with Ottawa National Access Cannabis (NAC) to specialize in marijuana at some stores in some provinces in western Canada.

In Manitoba, five coffee shops have been granted conditional permission by the provincial government. Derek Ogden, director of NAC, said that Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C provinces will also apply for relevant permits.

Unlike the above provinces, Ontario's marijuana business is completely monopolized by LCBO.

Ogden said that could change if the new provincial government wins the general election in June. He wants Ontario to open up the marijuana business to private owners.

NAC runs medical marijuana clinics across Canada to guide the proper use of marijuana. Derek Ogden is a former RCMP official who served as head of drug law enforcement before becoming involved in the medical marijuana business.

The converted marijuana store will be operated under the umbrella of NAC and will only sell marijuana products. The specific name of the store has yet to be determined.

It is not clear how many Second Cup stores will join, which depends not only on the approval of provincial licenses, but also on the wishes of branch owners and lessees.

Since its opening in 1975, Second Cup has about 300 coffee shops in Canada.

Its shares rose 28% after it announced that it was involved in the marijuana business. It is in fierce competition with the peer giant Starbucks.

NAC will designate Ottawa CannaRoyalty Corp as the supplier of marijuana products for the alliance. Sales include edible marijuana, vape pens, concentrated drinks, marijuana ointment and other products.

Federal officials have said they want to legalize recreational marijuana this summer, but the bill has been shelved by the Senate.

Until the bill takes effect, only dried cannabis and cannabis oil are allowed to be sold, and other products will be regulated for a year after the bill takes effect.
