The history of coffee cultivation in Yunnan can be traced back to 1892. A French missionary brought coffee to Yunnan from abroad and successfully planted it in a valley in Binchuan County, Yunnan Province. Coffee cultivation began to rise in the 1950s.

In 2008, the global financial crisis caused the price of tea and sugar cane to plummet, especially the unsalable tea brought a heavy blow to farmers. As a result, more and more of them began to switch to coffee. About the same time, Starbucks and Yunnan also began to have a wonderful connection.

In 2012, Starbucks established a grower support Center (Farmer Support Center) in Yunnan.

The quality of the varieties planted at that time was also relatively poor, and FSC initially hoped to promote varieties such as bourbon, Tibica and even Kaddura. However, the local environment is really more difficult to grow than expected, and the planting effect of the samples is not good all the time. So the method of improving the local coffee tree varieties was adopted, and the present Katim in Yunnan gradually came into being.

But this part is only a technical difficulty, and the bigger difficulty is how to get local simple farmers to give up the coffee trees they have worked so hard for so long and plant our improved varieties.

To know that it is easy to tell others an idea, but it is very difficult to change a person's opinion. You should have a deep understanding of this when you sell MSR.

At the time of the establishment of Yunnan FSC, Starbucks established Starbucks Love Coffee (Yunnan) Co., Ltd., a joint venture with local enterprises, for coffee procurement and initial processing. And all farmers who want to sell coffee beans to Starbucks need to be certified by a Starbucks coffee and grower equity specification (C.A.F.E. Practices). This certification is evaluated by third-party organizations, including quality, social responsibility and environmental protection. It ensures that coffee farmers get the return they deserve and high-quality coffee beans.

At the same time, it is Starbucks that popularizes the importance of full red fruit harvest to local coffee farmers.

At the beginning of the establishment of FSC in Yunnan, no one there knew about Starbucks. There are only 3 agronomists in the team, and only 25 people came when the first training was organized in Yunnan. Pu'er is also a winding mountain area. This has caused a greater problem for promotion, only three people visit local growers every day, in which the bitterness and suffering can not be clearly explained in a few words.

Tong Yalun, executive director of FSC, also shared the story of him and his agronomist at the opening of the baking workshop, sending samples of different varieties of coffee beans to the headquarters for five years. Every year, it is like waiting for an admission letter from a child, hoping that a sample bean will meet Starbucks' standard of ordinary coffee beans and become a coffee bean that can be accepted by Starbucks.

2009
