Dominica is an agricultural country with sugar and agricultural products as its main foreign exchange income. Now it is also a famous tourist attraction in the Caribbean region. In addition, it has a free trade zone. Therefore, the construction is progressing day by day. Interestingly, coffee drinking is prevalent among many nationals. About 350,000 bags to 500,000 bags of raw beans are produced in Dominica every year. However, more than 75% are sold for their own use.
Years ago, coffee from Dominica was known as St. Santo Domingo, Dominica after independence, is Santo Domingo. Domingo is the capital, but the coffee bags for export are no longer marked as Santo in order to show that they are independent countries. Domingo; most estates or cooperatives will still maintain romantic feelings and show the traditional crafts of the country with hand-painted patterns. The green mountain coffee, Montana Verde , is located in the valley between Pico Duarte and La Pelona. The valley is called Constanza Valley. This area belongs to 6 major producing areas in many countries. The area still retains virgin forests, and about 20 local farmers work together to sell green beans from their coffee plantations under the name Green Mountain
Cultivated varieties in Dominica include Typica, Caturra, Bourbon, Catuai, and 85- 90% of the major fine bean plantations are still dominated by Typica.
In terms of climate, due to almost year-round rain in some areas, the flowering period is continuous, so there are coffee flowering and fruiting all year round, resulting in a less obvious harvest period. Therefore, the harvest and treatment period of Dominica must be determined according to local conditions!
Coffee is mainly grown on terraced slopes of mountains or valleys. There are 6 producing areas in the country, but the fine ones are planted in higher altitude areas. The main coffee producing areas in Dominica are Cibao, Bani, Azua, Ocoa, Barahona and Juncalito. The top three regions are Bani, Ocoa and Barahona . In particular Barahona is the distribution area of some well-known estates, this batch of Green Mountain Cooperative brand and the previous European Green Sandalwood Estate are produced in Constanza of Barahona.
Bani is ripe, sweet and mild in flavor, close to Haiti coffee, while Barahona has an elevated aroma, bright acidity and still excellent body fat, similar to Jamaica or Puerto Rico beans. Caribbean coffees are known for their warmth, especially Dominican beans, which are considered the best value, especially compared to Puerto Rico and Jamaica.
Many countries are located in hurricane belt. Due to hurricane disaster, debris flow or occasional drought, farmers are most afraid of it. Due to successive hurricanes in previous years, good beans are extremely scarce. Although the latest harvest batch in 2010 has improved, high-quality batches with good cleanliness are still rare. Fortunately, the two major cooperatives in this area have jointly organized three cup test competitions and participated in SCAA and SCAE related activities. In addition to greatly increasing visibility, it is also very helpful to improve quality. However, high-quality beans are still very scarce, especially clean, rich and varied batches, even fewer; in the first round of the competition, 80% of the samples, the evaluation score is lower than 80 points, fortunately to the semi-final, can find more than 85 points of the batch, this batch of Osher selected Green Mountain, the evaluation score is as high as 86.5, and because of the early order, so the purchase price is very reasonable, we will return to consumers at a special price.
