Sao Tome and Principe is located in the Gulf of Guinea in Africa. Sao Tome Island is 255km from the west bank of Africa, and Principe is 220km from the west bank of Africa. The two islands are 146km apart, making it the second smallest country in Africa (after the Seychelles). Both islands are volcanic islands with an area of 1001 square kilometers.
Other neighboring affiliated islands from north to south include Pedras Tinhosas, Bon é de J ó quei, Cabras Isles, and Rolas Isles, which crosses the equator.

Sao Tome and Principe was discovered by the Portuguese between 1469 and 1472. Avalu Camina (Alvaro Caminha) successfully established a colony on the island of Sao Tome in 1493, and he also received the land as a reward. The colonization of Principe began under a similar arrangement in 1500. Portuguese colonists used the labor of slaves to turn Sao Tome and Principe into Africa's most important sugar exporter in the mid-16th century. Sao Tome has been under the direct rule of the Kingdom of Portugal since 1522, while Principe has been under the direct rule of the Kingdom of Portugal since 1573.
The sugar industry declined over the next hundred years. By the middle of the seventeenth century, Sao Tome was just a port of call for supply ships. In the early nineteenth century, two cash crops, coffee and cocoa, were introduced. The fertile volcanic soil in the area is particularly suitable for these new cash crops, so many estates (ro ç a) have emerged. Estates owned by Portuguese companies or non-local landowners occupy almost all the good farmland in the area. By 1908, Sao Tome was the world's largest producer of cocoa, which is still the country's most important crop.
The Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe (Tome é and Principe), a volcanic archipelago, is the second smallest independent country in Africa and was once a Portuguese colony, which did not win independence until 1975. The equator crosses the archipelago, where the climate is hot and humid, the land is fertile, the irrigation is good, and coffee is rich.
The country introduced Arabica coffee trees from Brazil in 1800, and 98% of the products are still Arabica coffee. But only 1000 bags of coffee are exported each year, most of them to Scandinavia.
