New Oriental is one of the seven regions defined by Guatemala Coffee Association (Anacafe) in 1980 as fine coffee, which is defined as the land between Barberena, Jutiapa and Chiquimula.
Since 1950, coffee in this region has been grown almost exclusively by small producers. Now, what was once one of Guatemala's poorest and most isolated areas is vibrant and growing, with almost every farm in the mountains having its own coffee-producing unit. Most of the coffee in the New Oriental region comes from small, family-owned estates, which also grow other basic crops in combination with coffee as a daily staple. The region quickly became more and more famous among coffee connoisseurs, and their demand for this coffee increased year by year. As a result, every farm in the mountains switched to coffee, replacing other crops as the main source of production and income.
Located in a region of volcanic activity in the past, the climate in the New Oriental region is cloudy and rainy. The soil here is composed of metamorphic rocks evenly mixed with many minerals, which is different from other soils that are also volcanic soils.
