Popayan, a city of southwest Colombia, the capital and largest city of Cauca, with an area of 483.11 square kilometers and a population of 258653, is famous for its annual food festival and is recognized by UNESCO as the capital of gourmet food. Popayan was founded in 1537, named after the local Indians, meaning "two thatched huts".
The city of Popayan is located in the southeast of the Colombian capital, with coffee-producing areas ranging from Ecuador to the highlands along the Andes in southern Colombia. The average elevation of the Cauca and Popayan plateaus is about 1600 meters.
