He arrived in Hawaii via Brazil in 1825. Although it is not clear what varieties these original plants were, they were all Arabica. Coffee was first grown in the Mumbnoa Valley on Oahu but soon moved to other islands. By the end of this century, coffee has developed commercially in all parts of the island, and Kona has won a reputation for high quality.
The state of Hawaii divides the planting area according to the political area where the farm is located. So there are eight coffee zones in Hawaii. Coffee grows at altitudes of 1000 to 1000 meters (350 to 3200 feet) and at latitudes of 19 to 21 degrees north. These relatively high latitudes lead to lower temperatures at low elevations, making it possible for high-quality production to be considered low-altitude in most other areas.
