Borboya washing station

Just a few miles from Yirgacheffe, you will find a washing station in a place called Borboya. The company's owner, Gizaw Alemayehu, set up the 3. 2-hectare washing station in 1997. Gizaw's father was a coffee farmer who later became a coffee merchant and then exported coffee. When he was growing up, he was surrounded by coffee, which shows his love for coffee beans. He is now immersed in its world, just as he was when he was a little boy growing up in Yirgacheffe).

About Borboya and its people.

Borboya is located in Gelana Abaya woreda (district), Guji district, southern Ethiopia. Most of the people who live here are Gdeo. Like many people in southern Ethiopia, one of the staple foods of the Gedeo is kocho, a kind of bread made from the flesh of banana trees. The leaves of these trees are large and wide, providing plenty of shade, and you will often find them growing in this area with coffee trees, as well as other natural forest trees.

Every year, about 500 small farmers from the mountains around Borboya send their best cherries to the laundry. They have a small piece of land located between 1850 and 1980 meters above sea level, with an area ranging from 1 hectare to 2 hectares.

Coffee is an important cash crop in this area, and most farmers in this area are already familiar with coffee care. However, to further improve quality, the station accepts only freshly picked red cherries for cleaning-ensuring that most of the coffee comes from farmers in nearby areas (which means they don't take long to go to the station). Further attention should be paid after cleaning to ensure that the beans are dried evenly and slowly. This includes raised African beds, shading nets, and regular stirring.

This is where Gizaw's lifelong coffee experience and his enthusiasm come in handy. Unlike other major exporters, he spends most of his time in Yirgacheffe, which is close to his laundry. He personally supervises the operation to ensure that the quality of the laundry meets the requirements.

Gizaw Happy, the new government policy makes it easier to improve the traceability of Ethiopian coffee, but there are still challenges facing the whole country-road problems, telephone and Internet connection problems, delivery delays, which can make it difficult for exporters to communicate with customers and ships.

Challenges aside, he is glad that his dream of becoming a coffee exporter has now come true. Although Gizaw has a wealth of expertise, his focus now is on finding new and better ways to improve the quality of Borboya coffee in his washing station. This will help him get a better price for his coffee and benefit coffee farmers in the entire Bobo community. To achieve this goal, he works with customers such as Trabocca to accurately understand the needs of the international market and find ways to provide such needs.
