Thunguri washing station
The Thunguri washing station is located in Kiriaga, near the slope of Mount Kenya and is part of the Kibirigwi Cooperative. It currently serves 1700 members, mostly small-scale farmers, who grow other cash crops such as tea and macadamia nuts, as well as self-sufficient food crops such as corn and bananas.
Farmers in Thunguri attach great importance to their agricultural practices and are well aware that the price of their coffee depends on collective efforts over the course of the year.
The coffee is selected by hand and sent to the washing station for pulping. At this stage, only pay attention to ripe cherries to maximize quality. Further efforts are put into the pulping process, followed by fermentation and drying processes.
In order to ensure that the coffee beans get enough rest, the coffee needs to be further processed, and the coffee bucket is surrounded by barbed wire.
