Front Street-Heirloom Coffee Introduction

When I first started drinking coffee, I knew that there were two big bean varieties, Tibika and Bourbon. Later, they gradually mutated and crossed into Kadura, Kaduai, and various other varieties. However, I had never seen the "original species" that appeared frequently in recent years in the pedigree of bean seeds. So what kind of "original species" was it?

The term Heirloom is sometimes used for coffee beans introduced to America and Asia more than a century ago, but is more often used for beans from Africa, especially Ethiopia. Native species emerged because buyers of green beans in the country of origin (especially Ethiopia), during the period of specialty coffee craze, were classified as native species because they could not identify the seed of the green beans they were buying

So, the original species we usually drink may not be the same species.

However, according to local buyers of raw beans in Ethiopia, the locals can actually distinguish bean seeds, but they do not name them with scientific names or names familiar to the fine coffee industry, but with local languages and local identification standards. More buyers of green beans are now buying Ethiopian beans based on location, elevation and cup score, rather than variety, I guess because of the complexity of the variety.

The Jimma Agricultural Research Centre (JARC) is an agricultural research institute established by the local government to classify, document and better conserve Ethiopia's diverse bean species.

Although there is little success at present, there is still a long way to go to popularize it to many coffee farmers and let coffee farmers classify according to uniform standards, but this is undoubtedly the requirement of increasingly developing fine coffee, which is also conducive to increasing the income of coffee farmers.

Knowledge points: Arabica and Robasta are divided into single coffee and Italian coffee according to the combination of coffee beans.
