Is the content of chlorogenic acid in Yemen VS Malaysia white coffee higher than that in other coffee?
As specialty coffee grows in popularity, so does the choice of interesting coffee drinks. However, sometimes it is difficult to keep up. Recently, I have been paying attention to some independent coffee circles and will see the word "white coffee" in local coffee shops, calling it the coolest new product. But it seems that there are as many definitions of this coffee beverage as there are variants of coffee.
With a term as simple as white coffee, it's no wonder people have different opinions about this coffee. The reason for the difference in definitions is because weak coffee drinks have been developed in many parts of the world. Because there aren't new, creative labels like "frappuccino," coffee shops often leave things a bit ambiguous.
Two types of white coffee you might encounter in a coffee shop come from Malaysia or Yemen.
White coffee starts with beans.
Before we dive into the essence of what distinguishes the various types of white coffee, let's talk about what connects them: coffee beans. More specifically, how the beans are baked.
Although the roasting process differs in some ways between the two types of white coffee, both produce light roasting. Unlike a deep roast, a light roast process can keep temperatures lower and coffee beans hold for a much shorter time.
For Yemeni white coffee, the beans roast at around 325 degrees Fahrenheit, which is very low. Therefore, when roasted coffee beans are removed from the roaster, they actually look almost white.
Although still lightly roasted, Malaysian beans are not very "white". But they're a very light roast. Also, during baking, bakers use palm oil margarine instead of the margarine, sugar and wheat combination used for deep roasting. This process gives the resulting beer a slight caramel flavor.
Malaysia VS Yemen White Coffee
In addition to subtle differences in the roasting process, there are some other significant differences between the two white coffee origins.
Malaysian white coffee, also known as Ipoh white coffee, does not refer to a specific coffee bean as many people mistakenly believe. It simply refers to the specific baking process and beverage preparation.
Unlike Malaysian varieties, Yemeni white coffee actually looks close to white, with nothing added. However, the similarities between the two are that they are both very light roasts, adding unique ingredients to the final brew.
For Malaysian white coffee, the name comes from the preparation of the beverage itself. After brewing with light-colored roasted beans, the barista adds condensed milk to the brown coffee.
To get flavor from the unique beans, coffee grounds must be brewed at a temperature of about 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Then pour it over the top of the cup to help cool and create a nice foam.
The Yemeni version, on the other hand, is about beans. While these beans are not always served in the traditional Yemeni style, most coffee shops that serve it still do. This means that a spice mixture called Hawaij was added to the drink.
Hawaii is a more aromatic spice mixture used in soups. It includes cinnamon, fennel, ginger, cardamom, cloves and fennel seeds.
On the other hand, because it is a lighter roast, it will have a much higher acidity than most coffees. Thanks to the added spices, the brew has an earthy, nutty flavor without the bitter taste characteristic of coffee. This is a plus for some and a disadvantage for others, so your personal taste will determine its acceptability.
The addition of Hawaiian coffee makes this coffee more appealing than your usual Joe coffee. Due to the subtlety of coffee flavor, complex notes of brew and spice mixtures can emanate.
Health benefits?
While white coffee should not be relied upon as a comprehensive health alternative, it does have some nice benefits. It has a higher chlorogenic acid content than other coffees (which already contain considerable amounts). Some studies suggest that this particular acid may help improve cardiovascular health, blood sugar regulation, weight loss, anti-inflammatory, and more.
So even if the caffeine content isn't as alarming as some people think, there are certainly many other potential health benefits for you to explore thanks to chlorogenic acid.
