A Danish study found that women's pregnancy rate halved at 5 cups of coffee a day

Coffee is a favorite of many people, but a new study published by Danish scholars at the 28th European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) has sounded alarm bells for some coffee lovers-the study found that women who drink more than five cups of coffee a day have a 50% lower chance of conceiving.

Dr. Ulrik Sinksler Kesmodel, a fertility specialist at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, and colleagues followed 3959 IVF recipients. The researchers collected information on coffee consumption and analyzed it in relation to age, smoking, alcohol consumption and weight. Women who drank at least five cups of coffee a day had a 50 percent lower chance of conceiving, but those who drank less than five cups a day had no such side effects.

Early studies on the association between coffee and fertility have had mixed results. Some studies have found that excessive caffeine intake can lead to miscarriage, while others have concluded otherwise. Recent studies have generally believed that women who drink too much tea or coffee every day and husbands who drink too much alcohol can greatly reduce their chances of pregnancy.

Pregnant women consume less than 200 mg of caffeine per day

For this reason, British expert Euan Paul warned that pregnant women and women preparing to become pregnant should limit their daily caffeine intake to 200 mg (within 2 cups).
