A new study from the McGill University Health Centre Research Institute in Canada shows that caffeine helps improve motor performance in people with Parkinson's disease. The study was published in the American journal Neurology.

Researchers divided 61 Parkinson's patients into two groups, one group took a placebo and the other group consumed caffeine daily for six weeks at a dose equivalent to two to four cups of coffee a day. The results showed that, compared with the former group of patients, the latter group of patients with motor disorders significantly reduced, mainly reflected in the improvement of motor speed and stiffness symptoms.

However, the results of this study need to be further verified by longer and larger studies. Caffeine may be approved as a supplement to conventional medications, and further research into the possibility of treating Parkinson's disease with caffeine is needed, the researchers said.

Caffeine is found in coffee, tea and other drinks. It acts on the central nervous system and cardiovascular system to temporarily relieve fatigue and improve concentration. Previous studies have shown that regular coffee drinkers have a lower risk of Parkinson's disease.
