Last Updated: 2025/08/21, Coffee is a beverage second only to water and second only to oil in global trading volume. This detached status is the result of changes in global trade and human eating habits in the past from the period of great navigation.

Chinese people began to come into contact with coffee in Taiwan in the middle and late Qing Dynasty, became popular in Shanghai in the Republic of China, and then almost disappeared. with the sustained and rapid development of China's economy, coffee made a comeback again. In recent years, the cultivation and consumption of coffee in China have attracted worldwide attention. The coffee bean market is growing at an annual rate of 20%. More and more enterprises begin to pay attention to the prospect of China's coffee market.

The vast majority of coffee cultivation in China is in Yunnan and Hainan provinces, of which Yunnan accounts for about 84% of the total domestic coffee production, so Cheng is the representative of Chinese coffee.

The history of coffee cultivation in Yunnan Province can be traced back to 1892 and was introduced by a French missionary. The western and southern parts of Yunnan are located between latitude 15 °N and the Tropic of Cancer. Most of the areas are 1000-2000 meters above sea level. The topography is mainly mountainous and sloping, with large undulation, fertile soil, sufficient sunshine, rich rainfall and large temperature difference between day and night. This climate and natural features are very suitable for planting Arabica Arabica. The so-called small seed coffee, which is a high-yielding international coffee variety, is widely planted in Brazil, Argentina, Indonesia and other countries, commonly known as Yunnan small grain coffee.

The real large-scale cultivation of coffee in Yunnan was in the mid-1950s, with a planting scale of 4000 hectares. By the end of 1997, the coffee planting area in the province had reached 7800 hectares, accounting for 70 percent of the national area. It is a pity that the development of Yunnan coffee lags behind in both planting and production and deep processing, and has not formed a good industrialization. In the past half a century, Yunnan has been a coffee grower. More than 60% of the coffee beans produced each year are purchased by Nestl é, Maxwell, Wyeth and other large companies, and the price is low, and never form their own brand.

After entering the 21 century, Chinese people gradually realized the importance of coffee, and people of insight began to make efforts to build their own coffee brands. On the other hand, Yunnan coffee relies on its own advantages, which is a strong guarantee for the branding of coffee in China.

Yunnan Dehong has the laudatory name of "hometown of Chinese coffee". Just one place accounts for 30% of the coffee planting area in the country. The coffee planting in Dehong Prefecture is above 1000 meters above sea level, of which 30, 000 mu are planted in the mountains above 1600 meters above sea level. in addition, the coffee grown in Dehong Prefecture mainly uses organic fertilizers and organic pesticides, resulting in high quality coffee. it is one of the rare high-quality coffee producing areas in the world.

Baoshan, Yunnan Province, coffee cultivation began in the mid-1950s, the local famous Lujiangba small-grain coffee, excellent quality. It was rated as first class in London, England as early as the late 1950s. In recent years, with the expansion of international trade, Lujiangba's small-grain coffee is more famous. Merchants in Europe, the United States, Egypt, Hong Kong and Macao, especially in Britain, the United States, Egypt, Hong Kong and Macao all regard it as the best coffee, and the products are in short supply. In December 2010, after being examined and approved by the General Administration of quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China, it was decided to implement the protection of national geographical indication products for "Baoshan small Coffee".

After entering the 20th century, China's coffee consumption market has also entered a blowout rhythm. The annual import of coffee from Brazil, Indonesia and Malaysia has maintained a growth rate of 20%. However, the high-quality coffee beans produced in Yunnan are unknown to everyone because the industry is not mature. The urgent task is to establish domestic brands with the ability to excavate and spread China's local coffee culture. Let the development of Yunnan coffee go further.
