Berlina Estate Rose Summer-Panama
La Berlina Estate Coffee Farm was founded by Colombian soldier Sr Segundo Diaz, who was sent to Panama to reverse the rise of separatism in the early 20th century. When Panama gains independence, these soldiers have the right to choose to return to Colombia or settle in Panama. Since the elder Diaz had fallen in love with Poquet and, of course, a girl, he chose to stay and start a coffee plantation. The Diaz family found enough coffee shrubs in the mountains of the Boquete Mountains to create an 80-acre local Typica "Criollo" coffee farm. However, because "jujunas" (raccoons) ate coffee fruits on coffee farms below and dispersed the seeds as they returned to higher elevations, most of the coffee was completely wild, scattered in the rich volcanic soil of the rainforest.
In the 1920s, at first, the children were formal coffee pickers, with the help of neighbors and some Ngobe Indians who came to work on the surrounding farms during the coffee harvest. During the harvest season, the family, almost 24-57 years old, picked cherries and took them to a water wheel-driven mill to remove coffee peel and mucus (natural sugar coating). In the meantime, coffee is stored in a special attic to take advantage of drier roofs and warmer air. For families, coffee is often used as a trading currency to get "luxuries" such as new shoes and even education. One year, one of the teenage sons made a hole in the ceiling, went into the attic, took a few pounds of coffee and used it as money to date his girlfriend!
By the early 1930s, the Berlin Coffee Farm (La Berlina Estate Coffee Farm) was producing a recognized premium coffee, but a self-sufficient farm could not have enough time to support a growing family, which now includes more children and several new members through marriage. As time went by and the price of coffee fell, Diaz's son, Don Manuel, was forced to sell the farm and the only life he knew.
Now managed by the Ruiz family, La Berlina Estate Coffee still promotes coffee grown with Boquete's original seeds. The fourth generation of families continue to learn how to grow and process coffee, not only through the use of existing technologies, but also from past lessons, with the aim of providing delicious coffee to the world from La Berlina Estate. Coffee beans from the manor continue to appear in Panama and international competitions.
At the beginning of the new century, professional producers are facing new challenges. In 2004, the artist was discovered / developed at the famous Esmeralda Manor (Finca Esmeralda) in Nicaragua.
In 2005, Mr. Peterson sold 5lb's Geisha Esmeralda Especial from his farm in Jaramillo to Mr. Plinioru í z Jr., who carefully planted a nursery and developed it with these seeds. By the beginning of 2006, about 3500 plants were ready to be planted in 2006. The best part of the farm, which was selected along with the old Typicas and built plants between rows, was a great success. In 2008, the plantation was extended, and by 2010, the first five pounds of geisha were harvested from La Berlina. The real surprise came in 2011, when the farm harvested 250 pounds, some of which won the 2011 Panama Best Award!
This particular area is tanned, and the bean has won many "best Panama" awards. It has a very clean and fruity appearance, which is why the farm is famous for its quality.
