How did Rosedale Coffee become the most expensive coffee in the world?

Rose Summer Coffee is the winner of Best of Panama (BOP) 2017. BOP is Panama's annual competition to showcase Panama's best coffee. It was a contest that ended with a world auction. Each year, more than 30 bronze medalists from around the world (a certified Q rater) taste more than 6,600 cups to determine this year's winner.

Roasters, green bean buyers and cafe owners from all over the world participate in the auction, aiming to buy their favorite coffee. This year, Rose Summer produced just 100 pounds of green coffee, with a high score of 94.11. According to the jury, this natural geisha coffee is "floral, vibrant, jasmine, lychee, peach, pomarrosa, complex." Simply put, it's incredible!

The coffee went on to be auctioned off and eventually became the highest price ever for raw beans ($601/lb) again.

Who grows coffee? - Peterson family

Coffee has existed in and around Hacienda La Esmeralda for more than 100 years. The farm obtained seeds from its birthplace, Mount Gesha, Ethiopia, through an exchange between the gene bank and the Coffee Research Project Network.

In 1973, Price Peterson inherited his father Rudolph A. Peterson absorbed the management role of Hacienda, a former president of Bank of America, who purchased the land in 1973. Price studied neurochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and received his Ph.D. in 1961, and his professional background in science became a major benefit of the farm.

In 2004, the farm won the Panama Best Competition Award for the first time. After this competition, they set a world record for the highest price they paid for coffee at auction, and they have earned a reputation as one of the world's elite coffee producers.

Hacienda La Esmeralda has won the Best of Panama Award three times in a row for their work in improving coffee by experimenting with growing and processing methods.

All of these efforts set new world records this year.
