It means, they all know that a small cup (that is, Tall in Starbucks), which retails for US $2.75, is better than the average coffee shop or restaurant.

In the United States, coffee drinkers generally have a basic concept of the price level of Starbucks.

They all probably know that a small cup ("Tall" in Starbucks) that retails for $2.75 is slightly more expensive than coffee ordered in a coffee shop or restaurant, but cheaper than a meal or an alcoholic drink.

But if you leave the United States and go to other countries, is the price of Starbucks an expensive luxury?

To find out, we studied 39 countries and compared and adjusted the prices of local Starbucks with those of other goods and services to calculate the real cost of local people buying a cup of Starbucks.

(the method of adjustment and calculation will be set out later)

The result is quite surprising.

In these 39 countries, the real cost of buying Starbucks is higher than that of the United States.

But how much higher is it? it is quite a wide range.

For some countries, a Starbucks latte is only slightly more expensive than an American latte, but it is by no means a luxury. These places include Australia, Britain, New Zealand, and Canada.

On the contrary, in some other countries, Starbucks may really be something that can only be ordered during a special holiday or payday.

The most exaggerated must be Russia. The real cost of ordering a Starbucks latte in Russia is the extravagant US $12. (more than four times that of the United States) as for India, Indonesia, and Thailand, the adjusted Starbucks price is about $7.

What does the adjusted price of Starbucks in these areas tell us at such a high level?

It is in these 39 countries that many goods and services are cheaper than in the United States. The prices of daily dietary necessities such as bread and milk in many places are lower than those in the United States.

This also explains why in many countries, Starbucks is labeled as a chain brand with a certain social status, reflecting the affluence of Americans and symbolizing their profligacy.

The area where lattes are most expensive

The following is the relative price of a small hot latte at Starbucks after adjustment. The figures reflect that Starbucks is a luxury, which may be more expensive than having lunch.

When you go to Starbucks in different countries, the cost of ordering will surprise you.

Research method.

What we analyze is the price of Starbucks's small hot latte "Tall Latte" in 44 countries.

The data is obtained by Euromonitor International, one of the most famous market research companies in the world, and it is the most recent market data we can get (January 2016 data).

In some countries, when Starbucks has different retail prices in different stores, we take the average to adjust and calculate.

The original data collected are all in local currency. Then why don't we simply convert the price of the local Starbucks into US dollars? Because in this way, it is not enough to clearly express the purchasing power of the local currency. Therefore, we borrowed a conversion method developed by consultant Nigel Babu that makes use of World Bank data.

This approach reflects the relative cost of a basket of goods (including food) between countries. In other words, the Starbucks price we listed is the real cost of buying lattes relative to other goods.

The conclusion is that

In all the countries surveyed, the relative price of Starbucks is higher than that of the United States, but the degree of cost varies.

You can imagine the figures listed as how a person who lives locally and earns an average local salary feels when looking at Starbucks prices.

To put it simply, it is the relative cost of drinking a latte for a local.
