One of the major events in home coffee brewing in recent years is the innovation of cold coffee machines. What does innovation mean? After all, cold beer does not need electricity or a specific temperature. A cold coffee brewer is just a container that allows ground coffee to come into contact with water for 12-24 hours. Innovation makes the process easier to start and clean up.
Back in the day, the only non-DIY (do-it-yourself) choice of cold coffee was a big old Toddy plastic bucket, a strange mat that needed to be cleaned like a filter and then replaced every 10 or so. It was good then, but it's better now. Today, you can buy a glass cold coffee maker with a metal filter, which is easy to set up and easy to clean.
Cold Coffee Pot from Alkani is the latest example of getting it right. Brewers use strong glass containers as brewers and pitchers to store brewed coffee. Along one side, you have a volume marker indicating how much coffee there is in the pitcher once the brewing is finished. Alkani has a thin metal filter with a handle so that it can be easily removed once the brewing is finished.
Alkani's step-by-step tutorial for cold brewing manufacturers
Let me tell you how easy it is to make cold coffee with Alcany.
# 1 ground Coffee
You don't need a scale, just grind 1 to 1.25 cups of coffee. Please refer to our coffee grinding chart for visual instructions. I found 1.25 cups enough to fill the metal filter. I'm using a lighter barbecue. Deeper roasts may require more beans because coffee expands and becomes lighter during roasting.
# 2 put the filter into the cold beer bottle
A metal ring with a rubber edge that acts as a collar to maintain the filter during brewing. Make sure it is in place once in place, put the metal filter in the coffee machine.
I put my AeroPress funnel on the cold beer bottle, ready for the next step.
# 3 add brewed coffee filter
This is actually the most difficult step, because you need to aim the venue at the opening ceremony, but it is not difficult. All you need is a funnel. I found that the AeroPress funnel is the perfect size for a cold brewing filter loaded with coffee grounds. If you do not have an AeroPress channel, you can roll up a piece of printing paper and keep it with a piece of tape.
# 4 slowly add water until the ground is covered
Slowly add water to the ground. I don't use the sign on the side of the brewery to guide. I'm filling the brewery, so the waterline is high enough to cover all the coffee. If you use 1.25 cups of coffee, that means all the way to the top. If you use less coffee, you don't need to fill the beer with as much water as possible.
# 5 wait 18-24 hours
Let the coffee brew for 18-24 hours. I use my kitchen counter, but I can also put it in the refrigerator.
# 6 finish brewing
When you remove the filter, some coffee will leak, so do so in your sink. Put the filter in the sink, then put the finished coffee in or store it in the refrigerator. Then you can pour the coffee grounds into the composting box. The only step is to clean your equipment so that it can brew next time.
Alcany vs family and above (cold beer coffee machine battle)
I really like the Alcany cold beer coffee machine. It is similar to the cold brewed coffee maker from home and above and is covered in a simple guide to making cold coffee. There are some differences:
Alcany uses a thicker glass bottom, which makes it more stable on the counter.
Use stronger and stronger metal filters for household use and above.
Both units have a slight opening that exposes coffee to the air, but both are very small. If this is a problem, please put the plastic bag or plastic package at the opening during the brewing process. In addition, since neither unit is waterproof at the opening, resist the urge to brew beer to speed up brewing, or if you do, cover the top and stir slowly.
If you use containers to store coffee, Alkani will take up more space (wider) and Home and Above will use more space vertically (higher). Instead of storing it, I transferred the coffee directly to the Mason can.
Soon after, after posting tutorials on home and above cold coffee machines, a bag of groceries knocked on my brewery, flipped over on the counter, and fell to the ground. Glass is everywhere. I believe something like this has happened to Alcany, it will not be dumped on the floor, because most of the weight is on the base. (the winemaker at that time was empty.)
The metal filter from Home and Above is thick and sturdy, but does not affect the brewing quality. I have used a filter to turn it directly into a clay stove.
I like these two winemakers, but between the two, I prefer Alcany's thicker bottom heavier design. If I wanted a winemaker who took up less space in the counter and refrigerator, I would put this edge at home and above.
If I can provide an improved idea for cold beer, it is to develop a lid to protect the glass. It can look and function similar to the glass used to protect the Eva Solo Coffee Brewer.
