The HARIO V60 coffee filter cup, named with a tilt angle of 60 degrees, has attracted the attention of coffee professionals around the world in recent years, especially after Taiwan's Chad Wang won the world coffee brewing competition in 2017.

Since the design of the spiral water guide groove on the inside of the V60 was confirmed in 2004, in addition to HARIO's proudest heat-resistant glass, it also extends materials such as ceramics, stainless steel, red copper and so on. However, there are also some differences in the use of different materials, which is the focus of our discussion through the test.

HARIO VDG-02 V60 olive glass filter cup (with measuring spoon), weighs 321g, made in Japan.

HARIO VDC-02W V60 ceramic filter cup (with measuring spoon), net weight 455g, made in Japan.

HARIO VDM-02CP V60 stainless steel smoke filter cup (with measuring spoon), 145g weight, made in Japan.

HARIO VDPC-02CP V60 red copper filter cup (with measuring spoon), 185g, made in Japan.

The outlet opening size of these four filter cups is about 2cm~2.4cm. Generally speaking, the metal opening will be slightly larger, which is one of the reasons that affect the flow rate. Another important factor affecting the velocity is the degree of spiral groove protuberance.

The inside of the HARIO V60 filter cup has 12 spiral water guide grooves of each length, and its main function is to create a gap between the filter paper and the filter cup, so that the air can pass through and let the water flow smoothly. We can see that the high part of the inside of the V60 filter cup has a short groove, so when the water level is flooded to this position, due to the influence of water surface pressure and clearance, the flow speed will be faster than when the water level is low.

Who is the fastest in V60?

So the first set of experiments we did was to continuously inject 400 ml of cold water into the filter paper to observe the flow rate of four V60 filter cups of different materials. Because the acaia intelligent electronic scale is used to record, there will be flow velocity and average speed in different periods of time. (separate the filter cup from the lower pot by hand punching frame during measurement.)

In terms of the flow rate per second, the maximum flow rate of the glass HARIO V60 filter cup can reach 31.4g / s, but the average flow rate is 12.51g / s of the red copper cup! The highest velocity occurs when the water level reaches the highest, but in terms of the average velocity, there is little difference between the four, but the glass filter cup with the most prominent inner spiral groove can provide a faster flow rate when the water level is highest.

Therefore, when cooking, friends who are used to flooding the water level to a very high level, it is suggested that you can use a glass filter cup to avoid the smell caused by soaking for too long. Those who are used to keeping the water level in the middle of the filter cup can choose a ceramic V60 filter cup to keep it smooth even when the water level is very low.

This round, the glass filter cup wins!

Who is the fastest to simulate the actual cooking?

Since these four filter cups are all "02" size HARIO V60 coffee filter cups, it is designed to brew about 2-4 servings of coffee, indicating that the reasonable weight of coffee powder will be about 20-40 grams. The next experiment was to simulate the actual brewing situation, using 25 grams of heavy coffee powder with 400 milliliters of hot water, pausing the clock while extracting 360 milliliters of coffee liquid. In the way of injecting hot water without stuffing and steaming to the end, acaia intelligent electronic scale is used to record the velocity data.

From the point of view of the fastest velocity produced when the water level is at its highest, the glass filter cup is almost indistinguishable from the red copper filter cup, but maybe it is because the overall height of the glass filter cup is a little higher, winning by 10.4 g Universe! Unsurprisingly, the V60 ceramic filter cup is at the bottom in terms of flow rate. after all, when the ceramic material is fired, the water guide groove is difficult to achieve the obvious protuberance like glass or metal. However, compared with the trapezoidal filter cup of other brands, the flow rate is relatively fast.

Glass filter cup, win again!

How many V60 filter cups do you have?

The olive wood seat of the HARIO V60 glass filter cup can be taken apart to allow the filter cup body to be used separately on the hand frame, and the stainless steel filter cup has the same design.

Of course, the speed of flow does not mean that the filter cup is good or bad, but to correct the coffee flavor through brewing techniques after understanding the characteristics of different filter cups. For example, users who are accustomed to using HARIO V60 ceramic filter cups, when they suddenly get a glass filter cup, can increase the steaming time or water cut-off times to improve the rich taste of the coffee.
