Two New York City law firms sued Starbucks in Manhattan on Tuesday for using a highly toxic pesticide called dichlorvos.

The complaint points out that over the years, Starbucks across Manhattan has used highly toxic pesticides called dichlorvos to control fruit flies and other pests near pastry and coffee beverage areas, and this insecticide is highly toxic. Exposure to dichlorvos can cause nausea, diarrhea, paralysis, and even death, so it is not suitable for use in the vicinity of people.

Starbucks spokesman Reggie Borges responded on Tuesday that the company had removed all dichlorvos pesticides and believed that no employees or guests were at risk.

Starbucks also said the lawyers and plaintiffs were causing public panic and seeking personal gain.

It is not known which Starbucks is involved. ◇
