Ketiara cooperative
The Sumatra-based Ketiara Cooperative is led by women. Twenty years ago, the chairwoman began to buy cherries and process them into green coffee. After picking the cherries, the farmers send the cherries to the gatherers for pulping and drying, with a ratio of 35-40%. When the coffee reaches the required moisture level, it is sent to the cooperative's central processing plant in Takken. There, the coffee is shelled and dried to reach the export level. Then, the coffee is finally sorted by hand and electronic color separator.
The coffee produced by cooperatives is 100% organic, grows in the shade of natural trees and produces high-quality coffee. She started out selling to local businessmen, but at the end of 2008, she organized farmers to set up a cooperative, which was founded in 2009 and has 38 members. Today, Ketiara has become one of the most well-known coffee suppliers in Medan, capital of North Sumatra. The cooperative is surrounded by Juunong Yousse National Park with a total of 897 members and a total area of 836 hectares. In addition to growing coffee, farmers also grow staple foods and fruits.
