Last Updated: 2025/08/21, According to Ming Pao of Canada, a young social artist created the first Faraday Cafe (Faraday Cafe) to block electromagnetic waves in Chinatown, Vancouver, using aluminum alloy screen as the interior decoration material, wrapping the entire coffee shop, making cordless phones and other electronic devices impossible to connect. It is hoped that Phubber can temporarily put down his mobile phone and promote communication between people, so as to change his life.

According to a report by the Canadian "Ming Pao", a young social artist created the first electromagnetic wave-blocking "Faraday Cafe" (Faraday Cafe) in Vancouver Chinatown, using aluminum alloy screen as the interior decoration material, wrapping the entire coffee shop, making wireless phones and other electronic devices impossible to connect, hoping to make "Phubber" put down his mobile phone temporarily, promote communication between people and change his lifestyle.

Julien Thomas, a Vancouver social artist, came up with the idea of building a coffee shop that would block wireless Internet signals during a conversation with a friend last December. According to the scientific principle of the all-metal structure "Faraday Cage" (Faraday Cage), he hopes to lay a metal net around the house by virtue of metal static electricity and electrical conductivity, effectively preventing electromagnetic waves from entering and blocking cell phone signals, hence the name "Faraday Cafe".

Construction of the coffee shop began in May this year, and after Thomas covered the interior with aluminum alloy screens, he found that it was still unable to completely block the wireless network signals, so he was in the middle again. A rectangular "Faraday cage" with coffee tables and chairs is built separately, which is 16 feet long and 8 feet high. When customers enjoy coffee in the Faraday cage, electronic devices such as mobile phones cannot receive any network signals.

Thomas said that with the rapid development of technology and the popularity of mobile devices such as mobile phones and tablets, social networking sites such as Facebook have become an indispensable part of many people's lives, even equating social networking sites with self-worth. The real language communication between people gradually decreases, and the warm conversation is replaced by cold words.

"in retrospect, is this really the life we should have? Are social networking sites really so indispensable? If they are really so important, how did people live ten years ago? " Thomas hopes that after visiting and learning about his coffee shop, guests will arouse the reflection of "Phubber", change their existing way of life, and improve communication between people.

At the same time, he stressed that the "Faraday Cafe" was not set up for anti-mobile phones and anti-electronic technology; on the contrary, he could not leave his mobile phone himself, and electronic technology has facilitated people's lives in many ways. I just hope that people will start to reflect, avoid unnecessary bow to the use of mobile phones, and learn to strike a balance between human development and scientific and technological development.

Faraday Cafe is located on Columbia Street (Columbia St) in Wenshi. On the 434, it has officially opened for nearly two weeks and ends on the 16th. All income from the coffee shop will be donated.
