A Costa cafe in London's Waterloo subway station (Waterloo) refused to sell sandwiches to a customer because he wanted to buy food for the homeless, the London flagship Evening News reported.

The customer, named Adrian Pinsent, took the homeless man to the store and asked him to choose the food. "I can't sell you sandwiches, or I'll be sued," the clerk said. " Later, the clerk said, "this is not the rule of Costa Cafe, this is the rule of subway station."

Adrian tried to get other clerks to serve him, but everyone ignored him. He said the situation was "incredible" and finally left £10 on the counter, saying he must buy it. "I don't know if the clerk lied, but I don't think he lied either. Someone should have told him that they would be prosecuted." Adrian added, "as a journalist and photographer, I think the reason why he can't sell me food is ridiculous."

Both the Internet Railway and the British Transport Police Service have denied that they have such a rule.

"We do not have a policy to prohibit passengers from buying food at stations and giving it to the homeless."

"We will ask our retailers to remind their employees to avoid similar incidents in the future."

"We can confirm that we will not sue any businesses or individuals who buy things for the homeless."
