The Serras Minas region is a complex mountain chain with an area of 242642 hectares (2426 square kilometers) and a complex and rich biodiversity and microclimate. It is named after its jade, marble and other mineral quarries. In 1990, the government of Guatemala announced the designation of 143000 acres of biosphere reserves. Several international and Guatemalan governmental organizations are not involved in protection and management. It is home to 885 species of animals, including birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles. There are 63 permanent rivers in the reserve. Its spectacular forests include oak, pine, pinabete (Guatemalan fir) and many other species, plus fungi, pineapple, orchids and more.

Kalibus La Sierra's story began a few years ago in the Sierra de las Minas reserve, specifically on July 3, 1982. It is not only a farm, but also a coffee plantation integrated with habitat and ecosystem. Most of the coffee work is developed in buffers. Calibas actively participated in the first workshop on the development and management of the new Silas Minas protected area organized by the University of del Valle in Guatemala. There is another area on the farm that is destined to be designated as a private nature reserve. Part of the farm is located in the core area of the Seradras Minas Reserve. Most of the trees planted on the farm are local trees.

The coffee on the farm is selectively picked. The coffee is washed in pure water from the spring and then processed in the wet mill of the farm. Many workers and their families benefit from working on the farm. Sustainable development and respect for ecosystems are strongly emphasized in farm management.
